Video Voyages

The video footage is from Tim Severin's film, The Sindbad Voyage. The film follows the journey of the Sohar, a replica ship of an Omani dhow hand-built of a wood called aini and sewn with coconut-fiber rope like those that sailed in the ninth century from Oman to China. The Sohar set sail with 25 crew members from Sur, Oman on November 21, 1980. After eight months and 6,000 miles (9,600 kms) the ship and crew arrived at the Chinese port of Canton. The Sohar was later brought back to Oman where it is preserved as a public monument to the heritage of Indian Ocean maritime activity.
